Helping members – That’s our Main Thing!

Credit scores can be confusing and complex. We are here to help! When you contact us for a financial check-up, we can work with you to review your credit to see where we can help. There is no impact on your credit profile, so it’s a win-win! Here are some recent success stories:

Our Fairfax branch had a father come in with his son, looking for an affordable auto loan. The son's credit profile was limited, and dealerships quoted double-digit interest rates! We got the son approved (with his father as a co-signer) for an auto loan at just 5.99% APR!2

At our Leavenworth branch, a couple discussed getting a HELOC to pay for education expenses. During the conversation and review of their credit profiles, we learned they had over $40,000 in credit card debt, a need to repair rental properties, and more. The members could pay off all credit cards, pay their education expenses, and repair their homes. This HELOC saved them over $37,500 in interest and $725 monthly in payments!

Platinum Mastercard Credit Card rate as low as 9.99% APR!3

Part of the Mainstreet Credit Union difference is our competitive rates. They are a prime example of our focus on our members. Our Platinum Mastercard® has a rate as low as 9.99% APR! 3 Even better, your interest rate is the same whether you make a purchase, need a few extra bucks in your pocket, or take advantage of our no-fee balance transfers from another card.

3APR is Annual Percentage Rate. The actual rate is based on creditworthiness.

Mortgage Rates Are Dropping After Recent Highs

Mortgage rates have been dropping over the past several weeks in anticipation of the recent news from the Federal Reserve. At the September 18, 2024, meeting, the Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by 0.50%. Mortgage rates have come down nearly 2% in the last 12 months! Refinancing can free up more money in your budget to use elsewhere. Talk to a Mainstreet Credit Union mortgage professional for guidance and pre-approvals today!

Platte County School District honored Mainstreet Credit Union with their 2023-2024 Business of the Year award for our continuous support and involvement within the school district. We are new to the Platte County area, and our branch staff wanted to make an impact on our local students’ lives. Mainstreet is proud to sponsor various programs, especially the Pirates Raising Outstanding Character Kids (R.O.C.K.) program at Pathfinder and Barry Elementary Schools.

The R.O.C.K. program has been pivotal in advancing positive citizenship in the district’s student body. Over the last 19 years, they have accomplished these goals by focusing on self-confidence, compassion, integrity, and many other positive traits.

Just a short walk away from these two schools, our Barry Road branch is proud to support such a fantastic program and school district. We look forward to strengthening our partnership in the coming years and being the neighborhood credit union for these students and their families.

Scams with Bitcoin ATMs

Have you ever received an unusual call, text or email stating the caller is from Mainstreet Credit Union and your account has unauthorized charges on it?

Recently the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published a Consumer Alert article in September 2024 called Scammers use Bitcoin ATMs to steal your money. The article highlights ways scammers will urge you to act quickly so they can help keep your money safe and gain your trust. They ask you to withdraw cash from your credit union, investment, or retirement account and then deposit your money in a secured financial vault with the use of a Bitcoin ATM. The scammers will insist that you don’t discuss the transactions with anyone and will stay on the phone and tell you how to respond when you conduct the transaction with your financial institution. Once your money is deposited into the Bitcoin ATM, it is now in the hands of the scammer, and you will no longer have access to your funds.

Here are ways you can protect yourself from this scam:

  • If you receive a call, text or email stating it is your credit union or other financial institution, use caution and do not click any links or share any information with the caller. Hang up and do not reply to the message. Immediately call a verified phone number (from the website or online banking site) for your credit union or financial institution to discuss your account activity.
  • Do not withdraw cash in response to an unexpected call or message.
  • Do not buy gift cards to send money to someone you do not know.
  • Do not believe that depositing funds into a Bitcoin ATM will protect your money.

If you believe that you have been a victim of this type of scam, contact your local police department. Also, contact Mainstreet Credit Union so we can review your recent account activity and verify that your account is secure from unauthorized access.

Want to learn more about how to spot and avoid scams, visit the scams page on the FTC website.

Protect yourself, your money, and stay safe!

Meet the Student Artist reception at Barry Road

What do Picasso, Dali, and Michelangelo have in common? They were successful artists before they became adults!

Mainstreet Credit Union is proud to partner with Pathfinder Elementary School to host a “Meet the Student Artist” reception at our Barry Road branch on October 15, 2024, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. During this reception, which will include light refreshments, members and guests can ask the student artists about their artwork.

The artwork will be displayed throughout October, so if you cannot attend the reception, you can still enjoy the art all month.

October is National Arts and Humanities Month

This month-long celebration encourages Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities and begin a lifelong habit of participation. Mainstreet Credit Union participates in this celebration by partnering with ArtsKC, participating in the “Now Showing” program, and promoting our members in the arts.

Arts KC

ArtsKC’s mission statement says it all: “Advancing Lives Through The Arts.” As a nonprofit arts organization, ArtsKC provides support throughout the art community. We are honored to support them on their mission and in our communities.

“Now Showing”

Part of our commitment to the ArtsKC mission is through their program, “Now Showing.” The “Now Showing” program allows local businesses to enable local artists to present their artwork. ArtsKC pays the artists a stipend for their artwork, and the artist receives 100% of sales if a piece is sold. Mainstreet Credit Union proudly displays art in our Wyandotte and Barry Road branches for our members to enjoy.

Mainstreet’s Commitment

Mainstreet Credit Union is proud of its artistic members. We talked with John Seevers, one of our earliest members and an artist, about his 60-year credit union membership and his talents as an artist.

John joined the Shawnee Mission School District in 1964. During his first all-staff meeting, he met a representative from the credit union who explained what we could offer him. He was sold and joined as one of our earliest members! John said, “The positive experience I had with the credit union led to memberships of [my entire] family.”

John, who creates highly adorned coiled pine needle baskets, has had baskets in galleries from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Bellingham, Washington. He explains his art by “combining the traditional coiling techniques with some engineering skills.”

John’s unique baskets can be seen and purchased at the Images Gallery in downtown Overland Park.
